Upcoming: Multispeciality Health Camp

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

This Sunday, August 23rd, we will be conducting a health camp in the MGR Nagar slum.  There has been a great demand in the community for health assistance and we are looking forward for a chance to provide it to them.  It will also give us a chance to work with the community more intimately, provide them with professional assistance and learn more about their needs.

We will have doctors from the following fields on Sunday’s camp: General Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Dermatology and Gynecology.  Thanks to all our doctors and postgraduate students for volunteering the little spare time they have for this project – we are indebted to you for your commitment to our cause.

We’re in great need of volunteers to help us out on Sunday’s camp. Please let us know if you can come by calling or messaging us at +91 9789901650 or sending us an email.  It promises to be a fun and exciting way to give back to your community!

The camp will begin at 10AM and go till 1AM. The venue is the same as our previous medical camps, located in the laundry facility on the same street as the MGR Nagar slum.  Please contact us if you need directions.

Independence Day with the children of MGR Nagar – August 15, 2009

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

This Saturday we had a very special education programme. We went and celebrated Independence Day with the kids. We started off our education programme by dividing the kids into three groups according to their grades. Our education committee had designed a specific programme for each group.

For the youngest we had a storytelling sesion involving stories about peace and working together in harmony. We also had games which taught them how to count and the names of different colours.

For the kids in middle school, we showed a series of pictures and played “Spin a Yarn.” This was a great exercise as it brought out their creativity and it was heartwarming to see the children get excited about their talents being showcased. This was followed by quizzing them on topics related to Independence Day.

For the older children we had an interactive session where they shared their hopes and dreams. This was followed by an Independence Day quiz. This quiz not only helped us estimate their knowledge but also taught them the facts they needed to know about the country we all live in.

We concluded our education programme by singing the national anthem.

Independence Day signifies freedom in every aspect of life, especially the freedom to live the life we were meant to live. By doing our part, I hope we can help them get closer to that dream.

Happy Independence Day! On this day, sixty-two years ago, India was formed into a sovereign nation.

We look forward to a day when all Indians can live with the dignity that is their birthright and we hope that we can all work together to make this dream happen.

Skit 9: Self Confidence

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Part of a series about skits produced for the Ramavaram children.

Skit 9: Self Confidence

Narrator: Radhika was a girl in school. She worked very hard, but she lacked self confidence.

Radhika: Mom, I am very worried about this biology test.

Mom: Radhika, you studied several hours for this test, right? Why are you so worried?

Radhika: Mom, you do not know how hard these tests are. They are impossible!!

Mom: Now you are just exaggerating, Radhika.

Radhika (hurried): The bus is here. I have to go to school. Bye mom!

Narrator: Radhika worried on the entire trip to the school, and by the time she got to class, she was convinced that she would fail. In addition to this, several of her classmates make fun of her because she had failed the previous test.

Radhika: O my goodness! I am going to fail this test. What am I going to do?

Teacher: Okay, everyone get ready for your test. (Teacher starts to pass out the tests.)

Srinivas: Hey Radhika! Are you going to fail this test too? Hahaha

Abhishek: Yeah, Radhika. There is no way you are going to pass this test.

(Several students point and laugh at Radhika, and Radhika starts crying.)

Narrator: Radhika did not do well on the test and went home completely dejected. When she got home, she went to her mom and told her what had happened.

Radhika: Mom, I did so bad on today’s test. I don’t understand.

Mom: Radhika, when I asked you why you were so worried this morning, you said that the tests are impossibly difficult. But there are no such tests like that. What you are lacking is self-confidence. You have to believe in yourself and believe that you can perform well on the test. If you focus on the negative thoughts, the result will also be negative. You must always work hard and be positive and have self-confidence. Do this, and you will succeed. Do you understand, Radhika?

Radhika: Yes, Mom, but what do I do when others make fun of me?

Mom: Don’t think about what they say. They do not control your grades. Think positively and focus on the test. You will be fine.

Narrator: For the next test, Radhika studied very hard, but she also thought positively.

Radhika: Mom, I think I will do well on today’s test.

Mom: That is the spirit dear. Now remember don’t think about what others say. Believe in yourself, and think positively. You will do great.

Radhika: Thanks Mom. O, the bus is here. Wish me good luck!

Mom: Good luck, Radhika!

Narrator: Radhika went to school in high spirits and prepared herself mentally for the test. When she arrived in school, her classmates once again started to tease her.

Srinivas: Hey, there is Radhika. How are you going to do on this test Radhika?

Rad
hika: I think I will do better.

Abhishek: No, you are not. You are going to fail just like the last two times.

Radhika: No, I don’t think I will fail. I think I understand the concepts, and I think I can do well.

Srinivas: Whatever. I guess we will see.

Radhika: Yes, we will.

Narrator: The students take the test, and Radhika thinks positively throughout it. She ends up with a 97 on the test and is very happy about it. Here, Radhika believed in herself and used that confidence to succeed on her test. In the future, she always tried her best to be optimistic and confident.

Thoughts on Prajnya Peace Initiative

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Time is moving so fast, I can barely keep up. Over a week ago now, Nivedita and I had the chance to attend a seminar on peace studies hosted by another Chennai-based NGO: Prajnya (prajnyaforpeace.wordpress.com). The Director, Priyadarshini Rajagopalan was a lovely-lively woman who is obviously very passionate about her work. I was happy to be in her presence, trying to absorb both her poise and knowledge. The event was held at The Madras Terrace House, which I recommend to anyone interested in art, music, or NGOs Royapettah, Chennai, +91-44-45038391.

Group discussion covered everything from Tamil Nadu’s education system, the current curriculum in government schools, and region-wide outreach efforts to increase awareness of peace studies. We met some great people and enjoyed some delicious tea. Other women that attended, all the participants were women, which set a great empowering tone, included: Mrs. Kala Doraisamy, the Principal of the Grove School (www.cprfoundation.org). They seem to be doing great work integrating innovative learning techniques on topics like peace and the environment. Also there was V.R. Devika from The Aseema Trust (www.aseematrust.org) who is working in Chennai slums. With energy and enthusiasm, her goals are in synch with Sangam’s. She is using performance art teach confidence, self-esteem, and English to children living in slum conditions. Overall the event was a lovely way to start the day.

I am thankful to Nivedita and Sriram for letting me tag along. Around every corner, here in Chennai, I have found new opportunities to learn and grow both personally and professionally. I encourage Sangam members to continuously reach out to others who share a vision for the future where peace and harmony can be seen in the streets of every slum, every suburb, every village. Everyone has something to offer. I hope that we can all continue to grow and learn from each other.

Children’s Park Group Trip, August 8th, 2009

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Here’s a short statement from Vidyalakshmi, one of the members of our Educational Committee, about last Sunday’s visit to the Children’s Park, Guindy:

Vidyalakshmi on the August 8th, 2009 trip to Children's Park, Guindy. It was a nice trip on Saturday with the kids. In the zoo we divided the kids into groups of 4 and one uf us went along with them and accompanied them. We made them read about the animals given on the nearby boards. We made them sit in a circle and played a game asking them to dance and sing. Finally we asked them to share their experience about the trip with us and what they gained from it. It was a first experience like this for most of the kids, so they were all happy for arranging such a trip.

We had lots of fun with them.  We were able to interact well with the kids and came to know more about them. The kids were so happy that day and enjoyed themselves. I was very impressed with the kids shared their food with us. They were all so lovable! Thanks to Paathai for arranging this trip and inviting us too!

You can see the photos from the trip in our gallery.

my dear slum chum

My dear slum chum…

Which is more intense? Your hunger for food or my hunger to satiate yours?

What is it I see in your smile even when there is no roof over your head? valor or hope?

Why should your ignorance poke my intelligence?

Why should it move me when you offer your hand to mine for your well being?

What is your survival telling me? Your reality or my inspiration?

By you being ignorant, did you know you brought out the teacher in me?

When you spoke about your dream were you aware that you were shaping mine?

Why this urge to share with you what I have?

Did you know when you sat on my lap I saw the mother in me?

By giving me all this, showing me all this should I not to be grateful to you than to expect yours?

What is more benevolent? my offering or your acceptance?
