Our flyer has been updated with new content, with a focus now on our initiatives and our upcoming work in the new slum. The need for a new flyer was borne out of the fact that much of the content in the existing one had been outdated.
The new flyer features our new logo. The left side now shows our initiatives, and the central area has a short paragraph about who we are and ways in which people can help.
This should best be seen as a temporary flyer. A new one is being designed, thanks to the the efforts of Keerti Kirpalani, a volunteer from Dallas, Texas, who works as a graphics designer. The content in this flyer will probably be used in a more informative brochure.

At Sangam India, we work with communities. We have committed ourselves to forging meaningful, lasting relationships in order to bring about real, long-term improvements, to help people to help themselves. We seek out suggestions from people in different professions, from all over the world, to help develop our programs. Teams from different countries develop plans and modules while volunteer groups within India focus on their day-to-day implementation, providing a system of constant feedback and planning.
We constantly search for groups that work near ongoing Sangam India projects. We welcome collaboration, consultation or advice, and innovative ideas.
We also welcome contributions, both financial and in kind.
Initiatives
- Health: We have held various health camps, in addition to conducting periodic health and hygiene education classes for children and adults. We also provide financial assistance for medical expenses.
- Education: We conduct a weekly education program for children of all ages including English, education in human values, and personal development. We also provide financial aid for fees, uniforms, and books.
- Sanitation: We are working to improve living conditions, sanitary facilities, water provision, and hygienic practices.
- Community Empowerment: Through the use of focus group discussions, surveys and constant community participation, we wish to empower various sectors of the community. We hope to provide vocational training and financial and administrative support for entrepreneurship and economic improvement.
A feature we worked on for the new site was Sangam India – Around the World. We thought of this idea as a way to show potential volunteers (like you, we hope!) what people are doing around the world to aid in our cause. Over the last few months, people have been involved in developing promotional materials, skits, educational curriculae, and sanitation and development research work. Volunteers have stepped forward from places like Australia, the UAE, England, and the United States. Their immense contribution helps us do our job in the most efficient and educated manner.
We hope this map will demonstrate to that regardless of where you live in the world, we’d love to have you involved in our project, and we could certainly use your help in our group.
Thanks to our numerous volunteers from different cities in India as well as around the planet; and we depend on you to run our projects!

The Sangam India logo seeks to embody the goals, beliefs, and hope of the Sangam spirit. We have adopted for the heart of our logo a classic symbol of transcendence: the lotus flower. Born into darkness and muck, the lotus eventually emerges high above its watery roots to bloom into a lovely flower. This symbolizes the core of our work, in which we assist and encourage those who are disadvantaged in courageously transcending their circumstances to achieve dignity, independence, and equity. The colors of the lotus petals also carry meaning for us: the red signals determination, strength, and vigor, while the light brown symbolizes the dirt of day-to-day challenges and hardships faced by many. At their intersection is a vibrant green, representing vitality and growth. This expresses our belief that when great determination is combined with firsthand experience of hardship, tremendous growth can happen. Finally, for the Sangam India typeface, we have chosen Archer, designed by Hoefler and Frere-Jones, for its welcomingly open forms and bold yet graceful feel.

As Priyanka wrote in her introductory post, Sangam India is now on twitter. The twitter feed will be updated whenever our blog is, and we’ll be sure to add plenty of other updates to keep it interesting. We’ll also be following organizations and people with similar focuses to tap into the network of activism around the world.
You can see our twitter feed at http://twitter.com/sangamindia. If you have a twitter account, please follow us! For those who use a newsreader, you can also connect to our twitter via RSS.
Thanks to Priyanka for her hard work in developing this.
We have compiled the Promotional Packet into an e-version which allows it to be viewed easily, on the computer. A sample is included below but you can view it in full-size if you would like.
Viewing requires Adobe Flash 8 or above. This feature is powered by Issuu. These e-format pdfs are a great way to incorporate the content onto a website – and we hope that we’ll be using more of them when our new site launches.
The Promotional Packet contains the following:
It is still available as a .pdf here.
Our English Flyer has been updated with some information about our Educational Programme. We also changed one of the pictures to include the Educational Programme as well. We use these flyers to show people when we explain to them what we do. In addition, we hope that you’ll print them out and hang them up in your workplace where people can see them.
There are both color and black and white versions, available below as Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) files; they are approximately 250kb in size. There is a Tamil version which has also been updated. Thanks to Uma Krishnakumar for her help with the Tamil version.

We invite you all to show your support for Sangam India and join as members of our groups on the social networking sites, Facebook and Orkut.
The Facebook group has been started several months ago and has grown to over two hundred and fifty members. The Orkut community was just started last month and is just beginning to grow. Considering that several of our members discovered us through Facebook, we feel like it has been a success.
If you are a member of either Facebook or Orkut, please take a minute to join! Not only is it a great way to show your support, but we hope to make these sites into communities where people can have active discussions. In addition, we’ll try to keep them up to date with events that are scheduled and in ways that people can get involved.
Thanks for joining! Don’t forget to invite your friends.
NOTE: for the Orkut link above to work, you have to already be logged in with Orkut. If you have any difficulty, just log into Orkut and search for “Sangam India” (in quotes) and our group should be the first to come up. Look for the icon of the smiling child and you’ll know its the right group.
